Soria

Soria is a Castilian and Leonese city, capital of the province of the same name. On the banks of the Duero River, the city stretches over the Castle Hill and the Mirón Hill, as well as along the gorge that separates them.

The first remains of what is now Soria can be found on Mount Valonsadero, within its municipal boundaries. A series of cave paintings dating from between 3000 and 2000 BC have been found there. Discoveries from later times have been made on the current Castle Hill. Remains of a Celtiberian settlement that likely collaborated with Numancia in its fight against the Roman legions. Notably, Numancia's archaeological site, located 7 km north of the city.

Few medieval vestiges remain in Soria. We must go back to 1119, when the city emerged as such, once Alfonso I conquered the area. Gradually, the city was repopulated and became a place where shepherding and the wool industry were vital. Its decline began in the 19th century with the end of the Mesta and the transformation of the livestock sector.

In terms of heritage, above all, the Co-Cathedral of San Pedro, a spectacular Renaissance site, stands out. It is also necessary to mention the Monastery of San Juan de Duero, one of the greatest tourist attractions dating back to the 12th century, a true Romanesque gem.

Something that is increasingly being valued is Soria's various natural spaces. Thus, worth mentioning is Mount Valonsadero, the entire Duero riverbank, or parks like the Alameda de Cervantes. Undoubtedly, a collection of green spaces where you can practice various sports such as hiking or climbing in a unique natural environment in the world.
