Alicante

Alicante is a Mediterranean port city, the southernmost of those that make up the Valencian Community. Its Iberian-Roman origins can be seen at archaeological sites such as Lucentum. Later, the city of Alicante was under Islamic rule and came to be known as 'Al-Laqant', from which the current name derives.

The Santa Barbara Castle, located atop Mount Benacantil, overlooks the city and the Alicante bay at 166 metres altitude. It is an Arabic-era fortress in very good condition. At the foot of the castle is the Santa Cruz neighbourhood, the city's old town. This neighbourhood of colourful houses is where fishermen used to live.

Just a few minutes from Santa Cruz are Alicante's main religious monuments: the Co-cathedral of San Nicolás de Bari, in Herrerian style, and the Basilica of Santa María, in Gothic and Baroque styles.

The Alicante Town Hall, housed in an old Baroque palace, and the Casa Carbonell, an emblematic Alicante building in historicist style, are two other places worth visiting. The Central Market of Alicante, with an eclectic style and decoration typical of Valencian modernism, is a building from the early 20th century. It is an interesting place as it is one of the most important constructions of Valencian architecture from the last century.

A very pleasant walk takes us along the Explanada de España to Postiguet Beach, one of the most famous and popular in the capital. In this same area we can enjoy a multitude of bars, restaurants, and pubs, as the port is a very lively and modern area. A little further from the centre of Alicante and near another famous and popular beach, San Juan, is the Monastery of Santa Faz, another of the most important religious sites in Alicante from a historical and artistic point of view.

The cultural and leisure offer in Alicante is very varied, with the Bonfires of San Juan perhaps being the most famous. It is celebrated on June 24th and is one of the most special for the people of Alicante. Likewise, Alicante has many museums such as the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA), the Archaeological Museum (MARQ), or the Bonfires Museum, where the pardoned ninots can be seen.

The Alicante capital is one of the best places to taste sweets such as Jijona nougat and dishes like rice cooked in delicious and different ways.
