Underground shelters of Almería

The underground shelters of Almería are the largest and best-preserved shelters both in Spain and Europe.

The air-raid shelters of Almería were built in 1937, after the rebel aviation bombed the city on 52 occasions. Following these events, the city initiated an incredible work of proportions. A total of 4 kilometres of underground tunnels that included facilities such as an operating room or different storerooms. Moreover, it is notable because they could accommodate a total of 40,000 people.

They were an optimal solution for the situation the city was experiencing. An engineering feat completed in just 16 months that prevented a greater number of deaths. With the Francoist victory, these passages were forgotten and sealed. In 2001, by chance while works for a car park were underway, these passages came to light again. It was then that a restoration and valorisation process was undertaken, with the aim of making this space a place of Historical Memory, a title obtained in 2013.

Currently, the shelters have become one of the most visited places in Almería. A space transformed into a place to better understand the Civil War and the subsequent Franco dictatorship. Guided tours are frequent, and its galleries are used as exhibition spaces with the aim of giving the space a more visual interest.
