The San Juan de los Terreros Castle is a fortification that belongs to the locality of the same name in Pulpí (Almería), built in the second half of the 18th century. It is part of the coastal defence system implemented by King Charles III, standing on the top of a high mound by the sea.
It is a free-standing construction, very visible and offering incredible views in a landscape setting of great beauty, as it is a perfect viewpoint to contemplate the Terreros islet and the Black Island, both classified as Natural Monuments.
It played a key strategic role due to its position on the Almerian coast, very close to Algeria and bordering Pulpí with Águilas in the Kingdom of Murcia. It acted as a coastal defence against the attacks of pirates and corsairs from the Maghreb until the 19th century.
The initial design of this castle was the work of Thomas de Warluzel d’Hostel, which was modified and completed in 1764 by Antonio Duce Oliveros. As early as 1745, it had to be repaired after suffering an attack two years earlier by an English warship.
Its floor plan follows the typology created by military engineers: a hornwork or two bastions plan, sloped walls, semicircular bastions, ashlar and few openings. This prototype was adapted to the needs and location of its construction.
Specifically, this castle has a single wing perpendicular to the access axis. On its southern side, there is a semicircular battery attached; while its northern side features two bastions forming an irregular trapezoid, flanking the access door. Thus, from the bastions, those attempting to invade the castle were fired upon.
It has two levels, with access to the interior from its upper level. After crossing a bridge, you reach the main door, where the decorative finish of its frame stands out.
Today, it is declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Inside, you can visit five rooms: the reception and information room, the room for the network of protected natural spaces of Andalusia, the history and ethnology room of Pulpí, the ecosystem room of the area, and the geology room of the municipality.
