The Geode of Pilar de Jaravía, known as the Pulpí Geode, is the largest discovered to date.
It is located 60 metres deep in the Mina Rica (Sierra del Aguilón). It was discovered in December 1991 by the Mineralogist Group of Madrid and is the only one in the world that can be visited without special equipment.
Both its dimensions and its perfect and transparent gypsum crystals, up to 2 metres long, make it an exceptional phenomenon in the world.
Its hollow volume occupies 10.7 cubic metres (8 metres long, 1.8 metres wide, and 1.7 metres high). Its shape is like a funnel, with the narrowest section in the form of an “L”. As mentioned before, the transparency of its gypsum crystals is impressive, since you can see the objects located behind them.
It was formed by a mixed karst-hydrothermal process. In the first phase, dolomite was dissolved, and subsequently, in the second phase, gypsum crystals were formed due to the injection of hydrothermal waters from the residual volcanism of Cabo de Gata, among other factors. These hydrothermal waters contained dissolved elements that facilitated the growth of the crystals.
These gypsum crystals have not yet been dated precisely, but it is most likely that their age ranges between 2,000,000 and 60,000 years old.
In 2010, the studies for the restoration of the mines were completed. It was not until August 2019 that the geode was opened to the public along with the visitor centre.

The Pulpí Scenic Space is not only a cultural reference in the area thanks to its varied programme of shows, exhibitions, and activities for all audiences. It also houses two interesting exhibition rooms open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday: the Black Room of Luminescent Minerals and the Painter Pedro Antonio Martínez Room.
Black Room of Luminescent Minerals
This room offers a fascinating experience through a permanent exhibition of luminescent minerals from different parts of the world. Thanks to ultraviolet light, visitors can observe how these rocks emit surprising fluorescent colours, creating a unique visual spectacle. This collection not only allows one to appreciate the beauty of the minerals but also helps to better understand the geology and properties of these natural formations. Some are related to the mineral wealth of the area and the famous Giant Geode of Pulpí.
Painter Pedro Antonio Martínez Room
Dedicated to the work of the pulpileño painter Pedro Antonio Martínez, this room showcases a collection of his works in which portraits and genre scenes predominate. Although born in Pulpí, the artist developed his life and work outside the town. His paintings not only represent the local environment but offer a broader and more personal vision of everyday reality through his brush. His detailed and expressive style allows visitors to connect with the depth of each character and scene captured on his canvases.
Both rooms offer a unique cultural proposal within the Pulpí Scenic Space, a place where art, science, and spectacle combine to enrich the cultural offer of the municipality.

The San Juan de los Terreros Castle is a fortification that belongs to the locality of the same name in Pulpí (Almería), built in the second half of the 18th century. It is part of the coastal defence system implemented by King Charles III, standing on the top of a high mound by the sea.
It is a free-standing construction, very visible and offering incredible views in a landscape setting of great beauty, as it is a perfect viewpoint to contemplate the Terreros islet and the Black Island, both classified as Natural Monuments.
It played a key strategic role due to its position on the Almerian coast, very close to Algeria and bordering Pulpí with Águilas in the Kingdom of Murcia. It acted as a coastal defence against the attacks of pirates and corsairs from the Maghreb until the 19th century.
The initial design of this castle was the work of Thomas de Warluzel d’Hostel, which was modified and completed in 1764 by Antonio Duce Oliveros. As early as 1745, it had to be repaired after suffering an attack two years earlier by an English warship.
Its floor plan follows the typology created by military engineers: a hornwork or two bastions plan, sloped walls, semicircular bastions, ashlar and few openings. This prototype was adapted to the needs and location of its construction.
Specifically, this castle has a single wing perpendicular to the access axis. On its southern side, there is a semicircular battery attached; while its northern side features two bastions forming an irregular trapezoid, flanking the access door. Thus, from the bastions, those attempting to invade the castle were fired upon.
It has two levels, with access to the interior from its upper level. After crossing a bridge, you reach the main door, where the decorative finish of its frame stands out.
Today, it is declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Inside, you can visit five rooms: the reception and information room, the room for the network of protected natural spaces of Andalusia, the history and ethnology room of Pulpí, the ecosystem room of the area, and the geology room of the municipality.
