The Picasso Museum in Barcelona houses the most comprehensive collection in the world of the young artist from Málaga.
The Picasso Museum (Museu Picasso in Catalan) in Barcelona boasts a collection of up to 4,251 works by the brilliant artist from Málaga, encompassing various artistic techniques. Among these is the world’s most complete collection of works created by Picasso during his youth. This museum clearly reflects the close relationship the artist had with the city of Barcelona during his formative years. It thoroughly covers the works he created from his early years as an artist up to his ‘blue period’.
Additionally, it hosts an important selection of his works from 1917 and the Las Meninas series, created in 1957. There's also a complete collection of prints.
The origin of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona dates back to 1955, when Sabartés – a poet from Barcelona – visited the retrospective exhibition on Picasso, Gargallo, Hugué, and Torres-García at the Palacio de la Virreina, during the third edition of the Hispanic-American Art Biennial. Following this event, Sabartés accompanied a group of French and Barcelona citizens to visit Picasso. Thus, Pablo Picasso rekindled his social ties in the city of Barcelona. Many of his friends and admirers reconnected with the artist. He also surrounded himself with experts on his work such as Josep Palau i Fabre.
Gallery owners Joan and Miquel Gaspar organised Picasso exhibitions at the Sala Gaspar. One of these exhibitions was remarkably successful, specifically the one in 1960 which attracted long queues and helped to reintroduce Picasso to Barcelona’s cultural scene after the Civil War. That same year, the Berenguer de Aguilar Palace was chosen to host the Picasso Museum, revitalising the Ribera neighbourhood's cultural life. Sabartés donated his collection of Picasso’s works to establish the museum. The notary Raimón Noguera, along with Joan Ainaud de Lasarte – director of the Art Museums of Barcelona –, presented the project, which ultimately resulted in the Museu Picasso de Barcelona.
Its doors have been open since 9 March 1963 and it has been declared a museum of national interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya. It occupies five major palaces that exemplify Catalan Gothic: the Aguilar Palace (Montcada, 15), the Baró de Castellet Palace (Montcada, 17), the Meca Palace (Montcada, 19), the Mauri House (Montcada, 21), and the Palau Finisterres (Montcada, 23).
In this charming museum complex that merges medieval architecture with Picasso, we can contemplate an array of works in various styles, reflecting the artist’s creative journey: from the most academic, yet with hints of greater expressiveness as seen in Man with Beret (1895), to his unique cubist interpretation of the Infanta Margarita María (Las Meninas, 1957).
Built: 1963.
