The province of Cáceres is located in the north of the autonomous community of Extremadura, famous for its excellent meats, its wines with designation of origin and the acorn-fed Iberian hams, just like its neighbouring Badajoz.
Its capital and eponymous city has a historic centre surrounded by walls of Arab origin and declared a World Heritage Site. Its Main Square and the Jewish quarter are some of the most emblematic places of the old town, as well as monuments such as the co-cathedral of Santa María and numerous noble houses. At the Museum of Cáceres, we can find evidence of the first settlers of the Extremaduran territories to samples of more contemporary art.
The municipality of Alcántara is famous for its bridge that crosses the Tagus, of Roman origin and built between the years 103 and 104. This town has other important monuments erected by the initiative of the Order of Alcántara. The parish church of Nuestra Señora de Almocóvar is a fine example from the period when the military orders exerted their influence in these lands during the Middle Ages.
In the town of Trujillo, we can enjoy the traditional Chíviri. This celebration, which takes place every Easter Sunday, has been declared a festival of tourist interest.
The famous sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe can be visited in the mountain village of Guadalupe, a historical-artistic ensemble.
Plasencia is one of the largest municipalities in the province. It is located in a strategic position on the Silver Route, and among its many historical and cultural places of interest, the two cathedrals, the Old and the New, stand out.
The county of Alcántara is an ideal place for those who want to enjoy nature. Vast forests of cork oaks and holm oaks cover the lands of the county, where the Tagus River flows.
The Monfragüe Natural Park, crossed by the rivers Tagus and Tiétar, is an excellent place for mountain sports or hiking. On the other hand, the Jerte Valley is another of the most special natural places in the Extremaduran community.
Aside from its cold meats and the Iberian ham from the Dehesa of Extremadura, some traditional dishes of its gastronomy include migas extremeñas, zorongollo, and cuchifrito.
