Cáceres

Located in the centre of Extremadura, Cáceres is the capital of the province with the same name and is known for being the largest municipality in Spain.

The high location of Cáceres, between the Sierra de la Mosca and the Sierrilla, has shaped its history and current urban planning. Despite discovering remains from the Palaeolithic, its origins go back to the Roman era when the local granite was used to build a walled enclosure. The Roman settlement was ravaged by the Visigoths and later the Muslims occupied the core until 1229, when the city fell into Castilian hands. From this period remain structures like the Torre de Bujaco, the Co-Cathedral of Santa Maria, and the Episcopal Palace of Cáceres.

Since the 16th century, with urban expansion, a series of buildings of great heritage value have emerged. Worth mentioning are the Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo, the Palacio de las Cigüeñas, the Palacio de los Carvajal, the Arco de la Estrella or the Hermitage of La Paz.

All this heritage led to Cáceres being declared a National Monument in 1949, the third Monumental Complex in Europe, and a UNESCO World Heritage City in 1986. Truly deserved recognitions that make it one of the most visited cities in Spain.

Besides its heritage, Cáceres also stands out for its gastronomy. Several culinary routes are frequently organised by the City Council, where tasting local products (wines, beers, olive oil) is common.

At the same time, the Monumental City has a series of parks and natural spaces truly worth enjoying. In fact, the city area possesses two Protected Natural Spaces: Los Llanos de Cáceres-Sierra de Fuentes and the Sierra de San Pedro. Both have been declared Special Protection Areas for Birds, being unique ecosystems.
