Las Cigüeñas Palace

The Storks Palace - officially named Casa Ovando Mogollón, Perero y Paredes - is located in San Mateo Square, specifically on Olmos Street, or the Ancha Street of Cáceres. It is known by this name for both the palace and its tower, because storks often nest in this building.

Its tower is located between Veletas Square and Cuesta de la Compañía Street. It stands out for its great height in relation to the palace. This tower is one of the most remarkable constructions in Cáceres, and at the same time, one of the most modified. It has a square plan and is built with granite ashlars.

Visually, the military character of the tower and the stately appearance of its façade can be appreciated simultaneously.

The fact that this tower is so outstanding in Cáceres is due to a historical event: Queen Isabella I of Castile (Isabella the Catholic) prevailed over her niece Juana of Trastámara ("the Beltraneja") in the struggle to succeed to the throne of Henry IV (Isabella's brother). Following this, she ordered the demolition of towers that exceeded the height of the roofs of the nobility's palaces, and they nicknamed Juana "the Beltraneja". This event is known as the demolition of the towers in Cáceres.

But from this order of the Queen, the tower of the Cáceres-Ovando, that is, the Tower of the Storks, was spared, which we can still admire today.
