Capital of the province and autonomous community of Cantabria, Santander is one of the most prominent cities in the north of Spain. Configured around the bay, its beaches, such as the Sardinero, are undoubtedly one of the main attractions.
The history of Santander dates back to Roman times, although the Cantabrian tribes probably already occupied the area beforehand. The city truly emerged as such in the 12th century, when it was part of the so-called "Four Villas of the Sea" along with San Vicente, Laredo, and Castro Urdiales. The ships used by the Kingdom of Castile were built in its shipyards. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption dates from this period, although it actually has been an abbey since the 8th century.
During the Middle Ages, Santander was a significant commercial hub, thanks to its port. However, it was from the 19th century that it developed significantly. The port began to be known as “the Liverpool of Spain” and Santander started to become a tourist destination thanks to the Baños de Ola, which were thought to have therapeutic properties. The Grand Casino, the Royal Hotel, and the Bellavista Racetrack were also built during this period. But above all of these stands the Magdalena Palace, ordered to be built by King Alfonso XIII for his summers.
It remains an important city in the north of Spain today. A place of great tourist interest for its heritage and natural spaces. In addition to the mentioned monuments, its bay, and its beaches, its northern coast is noteworthy, a natural park in its own right. Similarly, just a few kilometres away lies the Natural Park of the Dunes of Liencres, the most extensive dune system on the entire Cantabrian coast. Also located near the city is the Cabárceno Park, the most extensive animal park in Europe.
Regarding its gastronomy, Santander offers gourmet-level Cantabrian products in its bars and restaurants. Highlights include amayuelas, morgueras, sea bass, or sardine to dishes like cocido montañés or various beef cuts.
