Founded in a unique natural setting, between the Huécar and Júcar rivers, Cuenca is designated a World Heritage city. Its most famous monument is the Hanging Houses, literally "hanging" over the Huécar River. They are thought to be of Arab origin and are dated from the 14th century. Currently, they house the Spanish Abstract Art Museum.
In Cuenca’s main square stands the Cathedral of Santa María and San Julián, whose architectural canon could be included in the early Gothic movement of this style. Its features are very similar to French cathedrals such as Notre-Dame de Paris.
The San Martín skyscrapers are another tourist attraction in Cuenca. These typical Cuenca houses reach up to ten storeys high. They were constructed between the 15th and 19th centuries due to the need to create housing following a significant population growth. You can access these unique dwellings typical of Cuenca's popular architecture from the colourful Alfonso VIII Street.
The Mangana Tower, whose clock marks the hours in the city, is built on the site of the old Arab castle. It has been restored on several occasions, and some historians think it may be part of that ancient residence of a Muslim governor.
In the highest part of Cuenca is the Bezudo Arch, one of the ancient city gates. In its surroundings, you can still see the remains of the city wall and a fortress.
The San Pablo Bridge is one of the most symbolic places in Cuenca. It is a 19th-century iron bridge spanning the Huécar River. This industrial style construction replaced an earlier stone bridge built in the 16th century to connect the San Pablo convent with the urban area.
Another monumental place in Cuenca is the Merced Square. The baroque facades of its buildings make it one of the most beautiful in the city.
The city also holds secrets such as the Alfonso VIII tunnels, an air-raid shelter from the Civil War, and many other underground passages that also tell the story of Cuenca. For leisure and culture, there are various places in the city like the Cuenca Museum or the Castilla-La Mancha Science Museum. Additionally, during a stroll through Cuenca, we can appreciate the picturesque street art in the San Antón neighbourhood.
Notable in the Cuenca cuisine is the alajú pie and morteruelo, a hot pâté of game meat.
