It is located over the Campo de Ahabul (called like that by the Arabs) and the Corral de los Cautivos (called like that by the Christians) next to the forest of the Alhambra. In times of the Arabs, there were dungeons where it seems that some Christians suffer martyrdom.
After the King Boabdil handed the keys of the city of Granada, the Queen Isabel founded the hermitage of the Saint Martyrs of the Religious Order of the Carmelites, whose prior was St Juan de la Cruz.
The convent was destroyed in 1842 and the land was purchased by a private individual. Nowadays, this Carmen consists of a small palace surrounded by beautiful gardens. All this complex was created in XIX Century.
This beautiful garden is divided in ornamental flower beds and consists of different styles of gardens: the Romantic garden, with a lake, island and a large fortified tower, and hidden fountains: the Monastic garden, with aromatic and medicinal plants; the Eastern garden with a fountain that is surrounded by palm trees; an Islamic courtyard with an irrigation ditch and a cave.
