It was the first Islamic university, becoming one of the most important in the Islamic world. It constituted an academic centre that attracted philosophers and learned men of that time from most the countries. It was founded by Yusuf I.
When in the XVIII Century a Baroque palace was built on its place, the architects kept the old oratory or mirhab.
It is organized around the nave or central courtyard. The oratory has a square floor and four scallops make that heights have an octagonal shape and over them, there is a beautiful and worked Mocarab cornice.
Nowadays, it belongs to the University of Granada, Moreover, here we can find that some rooms belong to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Granada Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. The Sala de los Caballeros Veinticuatro is the place where the seminars and conferences are celebrated, also existing a room for exhibitions.
