Sabiote celebrates the 12th Medieval Festival. From 1 to 3 May

The town of Sabiote (Jaén) celebrates the May Day long weekend with its 12th Medieval Festival in honour of Santa María de la Estrella. A perfect chance to discover one of the vertices of the Andalusian Renaissance Triangle, at the height of its medieval atmosphere. Of course, the main stage for these festivities will be the emblematic Castle of Sabiote.
 

Below you’ll find a programme packed with activities for all the family.


Friday, 1 May

  • At 11:30 a.m.: Opening of the watercolour exhibition “Acuarámicas” by Antonio Cano, in the Antonio Utrera exhibition hall, former convent. Opening hours: from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. during the Medieval Festival.
  • At 9:30 p.m.: Opening of the 12th Medieval Festival by Luna Fulgencio, breakthrough actress in the film “Padre no hay más que uno”.
  • Historical re‑enactment of the visit of the Master and the Commander of the Order of Calatrava to the “Very Loyal and Noble Town of Sabiote”. Theatrical adaptation by Luis Morcillo Torres, performed by the Verain theatre group, in Manuel Jurado Park.
  • Inaugural parade of the 12th Medieval Festival in honour of Santa María de la Estrella.
  • At 10:00 p.m.: Opening of the medieval market and children’s camp with workshops and artisans, on the Ronda de Miradores. Also the taverns in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 10:30 p.m.: Performance of the play “Isidro y Antón, Santos son”, written by Luis Morcillo Torres, by the theatre group “El Marqués de la Muela”. Several performances in the castle dungeons for small groups.
  • At 11:00 p.m.: Performance of the show “El Reino de Azura”, by the Inmaculada Quesada Ruiz Cultural Dance Association and Tribus Sabiote. Venue: castle courtyard.
  • At 11:45 p.m.: Parade by the Pasión y Muerte Musical Association.
  • At 12:30 a.m.: Fire parade, combining fire, dance, music and ancestral mythology. Departure from the Plaza del Castillo.


Saturday, 2 May

  • At 11:00 a.m.: Opening of the medieval market and children’s camp with craft workshops on the Ronda de Miradores, and the taverns in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 11:30 a.m.: Equestrian parade of the caballeros de cuantía, organised by the Virgen de la Estrella horse‑riders association.
  • At 12:00 noon: Archery display by CDC Sabiote, in the surroundings of the castle.
  • At 12:00 noon: Traditional medieval horse races on the Ronda de Miradores.
  • At 12:30 p.m.: Jousting and lance display by the Virgen de la Estrella horse‑riders association, on the Ronda de Miradores.
  • At 1:00 p.m.: Parade by the “Milita Regis” re‑enactment group from Alcaudete. Departure from the Town Hall to the castle.
  • At 1:00 p.m.: Theatrical performance of the play “The Divorce Court Judge” (“El Juez de los Divorcios”) by Miguel de Cervantes, by the youth group “Verain”, in the church courtyard (several performances).
  • At 1:30 p.m.: Parade of the Heraldic Knights from the former convent to the Plaza del Castillo, where they will be received by the Commander of the Order of Calatrava, a theatrical adaptation by Luis Morcillo Torres.
  • At 1:30 p.m.: Oriental dance re‑enactment by María José Mora Martínez and Ana María Resina Mora, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 1:45 p.m.: Dance show by the dance group Las Taberneras, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 2:30 p.m.: Parade of medieval warriors from the market to the Plaza del Castillo for a medieval combat re‑enactment.
  • At 6:00 p.m.: Medieval dances by the Inmaculada Quesada Ruiz Cultural Dance Association, in the castle courtyard.
  • At 6:30 p.m.: Performance of the play “Isidro y Antón, Santos son”, written by Luis Morcillo Torres, by the theatre group El Marqués de la Muela, in the castle dungeons (several performances for small groups).
  • At 6:30 p.m.: Parade of medieval warriors from the market to the Plaza del Castillo for a medieval combat re‑enactment.
  • At 6:30 p.m.: Travelling magic show by the magician Antonio Jesús, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 7:00 p.m.: Street parade by the “Smo. Cristo de la Expiración” Cornets and Drums Band, accompanied by the La Corregidora Dance Association.
  • At 7:30 p.m.: Parade by the Rabila Argolla Moors association.
  • At 8:30 p.m.: Candle Procession. Medieval procession in honour of Santa María de la Estrella.
  • At 11:00 p.m.: “Custodium”, a show by the La Corregidora Dance Association, in the castle courtyard.
  • At 11:50 p.m.: “Aquelarre”, by the Inmaculada Quesada Ruiz Dance Association, in the castle courtyard.
  • At 12:10 a.m.: Celtic music concert by the group “Supervivientes”, in the Plaza del Castillo.


Sunday, 3 May

  • At 11:00 a.m.: Opening of the medieval market and children’s camp with workshops and artisans on the Ronda de Miradores, and taverns in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 11:30 a.m.: Equestrian parade of the caballeros de cuantía, by the Virgen de la Estrella horse‑riders association.
  • At 12:00 noon: Archery display by CDC Sabiote, in the surroundings of the castle.
  • At 12:00 noon: Traditional medieval horse races on the Ronda de Miradores.

  • At 1:30 p.m.: Parade by the Rabila Argolla Moors association.
  • At 2:15 p.m.: Oriental dance re‑enactment by María José Martínez and Ana María Resina Mora, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 2:30 p.m.: Oriental dance show by the Al‑Nur group, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 3:00 p.m.: Show by the Las Taberneras dance group, in the Plaza del Castillo.
  • At 5:00 p.m.: Theatrical performance of the play “The Divorce Court Judge” (“El Juez de los Divorcios”) by Miguel de Cervantes, by the Verain youth group, at the Árbol de Mariquita.
  • At 6:00 p.m.: Re‑enactment of the Great Battle of La Serna between the forces of Isabella of Castile and Juana “la Beltraneja”, on the Ronda de Miradores.
  • Great Battle of La Serna.
  • At 7:30 p.m.: Oriental dance show, in the Plaza del Castillo.
