Sacred Chapel of the Saviour of the World

Artistic Description: Exterior

The exterior of the Sacra Capilla del Salvador features three doorways, corresponding to the West, North and South sides. It has a single tower, topped with an onion shape following the Central European style.

The main façade is the West one, structured in a triumphal arch. As it is a funerary pantheon, the central theme of its iconography revolves around death. The coats of arms of the Cobos, with five rampant lions supported by atlantes, and that of the Mendoza (from his wife, María de Mendoza) are represented.

The first body of this façade is a semi-circular arch supported on imposts with a highlighted keystone. This arch is framed by pairs of Ionic columns whose shaft is adorned with garlands.

Above the keystone of the arch, there is a cartouche, and allegorical figures on both sides in the spandrels. In the soffit of the arch, a series of classical gods is represented: Aeolus, Vulcan, Neptune, Antaeus, Diana, Mercury, Venus, Phoebus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Above this arch framed by columns, there is a frieze decorated with scenes from the Exodus.

The central part of the second body is occupied by the relief of the Transfiguration of Christ. On both sides of this, there are children with figures of Saints. There are also references to the Labours of Hercules. Thus, a parallel is drawn between Hercules and Jesus (both are sons of the supreme god who must live as mortals, and after a treacherous death, must reclaim their rightful position).

The façade is completed with noble coats of arms on both sides (very common in Úbeda), with the arms of the Cobos and the Mendoza. This is repeated at the top of the buttresses and in the oculi. At the bottom of the buttresses, on the left, you can see the struggle of Hercules and Geryon, and on the right Hercules and the bulls of Geryon.

The third body stands out with a semi-circular window topped by a triangular pediment.

The South doorway has a classicist structure, but with a more Plateresque concept. It is dedicated to Charity. Its elaborate design is the work of Esteban Jamete. It shines with golden tones in the sunset light.

The North doorway is structured in its first body with a semi-circular arch framed by paired columns. These columns are interrupted by cartouches. Above this body, there is a frieze decorated with grotesques. Above the frieze, pedestals are placed on the lateral sides with images of the Annunciation, and in the centre a curved pediment. In the tympanum of this pediment, the image of Santiago "Matamoros" appears.
