The Church of Santa María

History

In 1424, the old Almohad major mosque was demolished to construct the new church. The first phase of this was completed in 1518, during which time master builders such as Rodrigo Gibaja, and senior masters of Seville Cathedral like Alonso Rodríguez and Antón Gallego, worked on it.

Then Juan de Matienzo took over, starting the second phase from 1525. Here, Diego de Riaño played an important role by vaulting the central dome. Juan de Escalona led the works in 1542, designing the chapel of the Virgin of Grace.

In 1566, Hernán Ruiz was requested to visit to appraise the construction so far, due to economic and labour problems. His visit boosted the work to complete it in 1578 by Pedro Díaz de Palacios. During this period, the choir stand must have been constructed, presenting certain Mannerist style elements.

During the 17th and 18th centuries, several renovations were made. The last ones were in the 19th century with the construction of the church's west façade, the two corresponding to the main chapel, as well as its windows.
