Province of Soria

Soria is one of the smallest provinces in Spain, but it boasts great historical interest due to the many palaeontological and pre-Roman sites that can be found in the province and its importance during the medieval period. Soria is also famous for its status as a region of porticoed Romanesque and for having been known as a «city of poets», with Antonio Machado being one of its most celebrated residents.

In the city of Soria, marvellous architectural works can be seen, such as the monastery of San Juan de Duero, founded by the Templars and a unique work in European Romanesque; the co-cathedral of San Pedro, built on an original base of this style in the 16th century, or the ruins of the church of San Nicolás. The bridge over the Duero also dates from the medieval period. Furthermore, the hermitage of San Saturio, built over the cave of Peñalba, is a small church whose origins date back to the 12th century and was completely rebuilt during the Baroque period. Its Plaza Mayor is one of the most representative of Castilian Spain.

Almazán or Medinaceli are two of the most interesting places in the province. In Almazán, you can see in its Plaza Mayor the palace of the Hurtado de Mendoza, one of the finest examples of Gothic and Renaissance civil architecture in Soria. Medinaceli has Roman and medieval remains of immeasurable value.

Burgo de Osma, San Esteban de Gormaz or Calatañazor maintain their primitive medieval essence through their walls, constructions and bridges.

In Casillas de Berlanga, the hermitage of San Baudelio is located, a true gem probably from the Visigothic period. It is a small and mysterious space of great beauty.

The archaeological site of Numancia houses the remains of an ancient Celtiberian city. Numancia was besieged by the Romans and its inhabitants resisted for a year but eventually chose to take their own lives rather than submit.  Another of the archaeological sites in the province is Tiermes, a city that also resisted the Romans. In this place, various remains can be found, ranging from the remains of the original Celtiberian city to cave dwellings, as well as the remains of the city that the Romans built.

The province of Soria has many rock shelters covered with cave paintings, specifically on Valonsadero mountain.

The natural park of Sierra de Urbión y Laguna Negra is a natural area in the province of Soria that is home to a great diversity of flora and fauna. The Laguna Negra is one of the most beautiful natural lakes in Spain. The natural park of Cañón del Río Lobos has a large number of caves and cliffs where various species of birds live, including griffon vultures and eagles.

One of the most outstanding and famous products of the province of Soria is its excellent butter, as well as the wide variety of mushrooms and boletus that can be found in Soria's lands.

Soria is a Castilian and Leonese city, capital of the province of the same name. On the banks of the Duero River, the city stretches over the Castle Hill and the Mirón Hill, as well as along the gorge that separates them.
