Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is a capital municipality of the province and the island with the same name. Situated in the northwest of the island, in the heart of the Atlantic Ocean, the city is a world-renowned tourist landmark.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has traces of occupation since the Guanche era (the island's aboriginals), that is, from about 2,000 years ago. This area belonged to the Guanche kingdom of Anaga, one of the nine into which the island was divided. The so-called San Andrés Mummy is one of the most popular remains from this period.

In 1494, the Castilian troops led by Alonso Fernández de Lugo arrived. This marked the start of a fast-paced occupation and conquest process. From that moment on, the port of Tenerife became one of the most important in the Atlantic. During this time, the Church of the Conception in Santa Cruz was built. Urban development began in the 17th century. In these centuries, the port area was fortified against attacks from English and Flemish pirates. By the 19th century, the city developed much more, with the highlight of this period being the so-called Sea Lantern, a small lighthouse.

From the 20th century, the Island Council of Tenerife, an impressive eclectic building, stands out. Also noteworthy are the Museum of Nature and Man, the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Auditorium of Tenerife, and the International Trade Fair and Congress Centre, modern monumental buildings of reference. In them, you can see an important display of the area's heritage or attend concerts, theatre performances, and other events.

Tenerife also stands out for the quality of its beaches. Mention should be made of those in Almaciga, Antequera, Benijo, Las Gaviotas, or Casas Blancas. These are truly attractive natural and recreational environments that attract tourists from all over the world.
