The Church of San Antón, also known as San Antonio Abad, is one of the most popular and recognised temples in Bilbao. Built on the banks of the Bilbao estuary at the end of the 15th century, recent excavations have revealed the existence of a previous temple on its same site. In fact, in the altar of the current building, remains of walls from previous centuries and of the aforementioned church that previously existed can be appreciated.
The Church is characterised by a Gothic style, mainly noticeable in its interior. Its exterior shows how the portico is clearly Renaissance and the bell tower Baroque. This is because they were built later, in the 16th and 18th centuries, respectively.
Inside, you can see works by Luis Paret, Manuel Losada, or Guiot de Beaugrant, the author of the Plateresque-style Pietà Altarpiece.
