7 destinations in Spain perfect for enjoying beach, sun and culture

This summer we suggest seven cities that have it all: beaches, great gastronomy and spectacular cultural heritage.

1. Cádiz: the silver cup

Cádiz is one of the oldest cities in the West, with more than 3,000 years of history. Its origins are preserved in the archaeological site of Gádir, the Phoenician city (9th century BC). Don't miss its narrow streets, the majestic Cathedral of Cádiz with Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles, crowned by its golden dome shaping the Cadiz skyline. Also, visit the Torre Tavira (18th century) with its camera obscura and the Castle of San Sebastián, said by classic legend to occupy the location of the former Temple of Kronos. And of course, spend an afternoon on La Caleta beach, enjoying a beautiful sunset. To explore all these charms in detail, join one of these guided tours in Cádiz, perfect for a panoramic or thematic tour, according to your preference.

2. Málaga: art, history and sea

Málaga, the capital of the Costa del Sol, is more than just sun and La Malagueta beach. Its historical centre preserves a grand legacy. The city surprises with an excellently preserved Arab Alcazaba, a Roman theatre, and the Renaissance Cathedral of the Encarnación standing over an ancient mosque. Its origins as Phoenician Malaka can be noted in a lighthouse that once stood in the Gibralfaro Castle, whose viewpoint offers spectacular panoramic views. Additionally, it boasts a rich cultural offer, earning it the name City of Museums: the Picasso Museum and the Birthplace Museum of this world-renowned Malagan painter, the Centre Pompidou, and the Carmen Thyssen Museum with collections from the 19th and 20th centuries, among others.

It is a must to stroll along Muelle Uno at sunset and enjoy a vibrant atmosphere by the sea. Of course, you can't leave without tasting grilled sardines or a mixed fish fry. Furthermore, to delve into its history and rich culture, you can book a guided tour of the Historical Centre and Cathedral of Málaga. And, at nightfall, nothing tops watching a live flamenco show in a Malagan tablao.

3. Almería: desert, castles and otherworldly landscapes

Almería is a surprising destination where history and nature go hand in hand. The Alcazaba of Almería, one of Spain's largest Muslim fortresses, dominates the city with its spectacular views. The Cathedral Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation (16th century) stands out with its peculiar “fortress” look with thick buttresses outside. By the sea, you can admire the old Cable Inglés, a relic of Almería's prominent mining industry, transporting ore from the Alquife Mines.

Outside the capital, dive into the Tabernas Desert, the natural backdrop for legendary western films, or discover the volcanic beauty of the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. The Mermaid's Reef, with its rock formations and turquoise waters, will transport you to another world. You'll find countless places to explore and activities to make the most of your getaway. From guided tours in Almería and its Alcazaba to horseback riding through the Tabernas Desert, or enjoying a day excursion in Cabo de Gata from Almería, exploring its cinematic connections.

4. Valencia: tradition and modernity

Valencia beautifully blends its historical legacy with modernity. Founded by the Romans as Valentia, “land of the brave”, it holds its history in the Old City and the modern parts beyond the walls. You can explore sites from the Silk Exchange to the iconic and futuristic City of Arts and Sciences; through the Serranos Towers and the Cathedral of Saint Mary with its “Miguelete”, a fascinating architectural ensemble blending Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Summer invites you to end the day on the Malvarrosa beach, indulging in an authentic Valencian paella. You can't miss cultural tourism plans such as a guided tour of Valencia's Historic Centre or a Tour in the City of Arts and Sciences + Oceanogràfic and Science Museum Tickets.

5. Tarragona: the Rome by the Mediterranean

Tarragona offers an incredible Roman legacy on the Costa Dorada from its past as Tárraco: an amphitheatre by the sea, a circus, a forum, an aqueduct, remains of imperial walls, and the Tower of the Scipios. The modern Tarragona was built over the Roman city, conserving unique monuments from its medieval past like its distinctive Gothic cathedral. The Catalan modernism fever also marked Tarragona, as seen in the Chapel of the Convent of the Discalced Carmelite Fathers or the Mausoleum of Jaume I, by Lluis Domenech i Montaner.  In summer, the city comes alive with festivals, markets, and bustling promenades. Tarragona is ideal for combining culture with a dip in its crystal-clear beaches.

6. San Sebastián: elegance between mountains and culture

Beyond its famous La Concha beach, Donostia stands out for its elegance and its intense cultural life. The neo-Gothic Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, the eclectic Royal Palace of Miramar, the San Telmo Museum, and the old quarter brimming with history complement an experience that pairs with its renowned gastronomy. San Sebastián is perfect for those seeking summer in style with fresher temperatures. Don't miss out on an enticing guided tour of San Sebastián with a Pintxo tasting or exploring the beaches of San Sebastián on a guided bike route.

7. Palma de Mallorca: coves, history and Mediterranean atmosphere

The Balearic capital is a destination for those seeking Mediterranean essence by the sea and incredible coves. Its stunning Gothic Cathedral of Santa María with thick buttresses by the sea, the Lonja of Palma with its helical columns, the Royal Palace of La Almudaina and the Bellver Castle —a unique Gothic fortress with a circular plan and an elegant central courtyard— are must-stops to uncover Palma's medieval past since the times of Jaume I. The old town invites leisurely strolls. Moreover, near the city, you'll find beaches and coves with turquoise waters to relax after a day of cultural tourism. And, at sunset, unwind watching a flamenco show at Tablao Flamenco Alma, in the heart of the city.
