Wine tourism in Spain: 7 essential destinations for wine lovers

Wine is part of the essence of Spanish culture and gastronomy. Each glass tells a story of tradition, landscapes and unique flavours. From north to south, we find regions that stand out for the tradition, quality and exceptional nature of their wines.

Engaging in wine tourism is much more than visiting wineries: it's about discovering charming villages, touring century-old vineyards and being surprised by experiences that awaken the senses.

If you want to experience an unforgettable getaway, we propose seven destinations where wine takes centre stage. In these places, each guided tour becomes a journey into the history, flavour and hospitality of our land.

La Rioja

Talking about wine in Spain means talking about La Rioja, a world-renowned wine reference with historic wineries and landscapes that seem taken from a painting. Here red wines such as Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva are produced with varieties including Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo.

A perfect way to immerse yourself in this tradition is with the La Rioja wine tour from Bilbao, which includes private transport, a stop at the medieval village of Laguardia and visits to two different wineries. The experience is completed with tastings of various wines, a light pintxos lunch and spectacular panoramic vineyard views.

Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz)

Jerez is synonymous with international prestige, endorsed by its D.O. "Jerez-Xérès-Sherry". Its centuries-old wineries - such as González Byass (Tío Pepe) or El Maestro Sierra - are guardians of unique wines like Fino, Oloroso, Amontillado and the iconic Jerez Brandy.

To experience the essence of this city, nothing beats a guided tour to the historic centre of Jerez de la Frontera with wine tasting in a traditional "tabanco". Here you'll taste two of its wines in an authentic atmosphere filled with history.

Chiclana de la Frontera (Cádiz)

Chiclana is distinguished by its generous wines: Fino, Amontillado, Palo Cortado, Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez. Among its wine temples stands Bodega Manuel Aragón "El Sanatorio", founded in 1896 and famous for Moscatel Gloria.

The most recommended experience in Chiclana is the visit to Bodega Manuel Aragón, which includes a tour of one of its vineyards, production and ageing areas, as well as a tasting of 4 wines – including the emblematic Moscatel Gloria – accompanied by typical tapas. Each sip comes with an explanation from a local specialist.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda (Cádiz)

The Cadiz coast holds a treasure for wine lovers: the Manzanilla of Sanlúcar. It is characterised by its freshness with saline notes, a taste explained by Sanlúcar's location, next to the sea and the Guadalquivir.

To try the Manzanilla of Sanlúcar, there's no better place than Bodegas Barbadillo, with over 200 years of history. The guided tour of Bodegas Barbadillo with wine tasting includes entry to the Manzanilla Museum, in a typical Andalusian house, and a tasting of 3 wines. An essential experience that combines culture, tradition and authentic flavour.

Bollullos Par del Condado (Huelva)

In Huelva, the D.O. Condado de Huelva features wines with their own character. In Bollullos Par del Condado, the centuries-old Bodegas Andrade (1885) stand out, where tradition and modernity coexist in an unparalleled environment.

The best way to get to know it is with the visit to Bodegas Andrade and Wine Museum, including tours of aged wine cellars, the 1885 winery and one of the few visitable winepresses in Spain. The tour ends with a tasting of four wines and typical tapas.

If you prefer to go further and immerse yourself in the wine world of this place, you can opt for the visit to the vineyards, Bodega Andrade 1885 and Wine Museum.

Lebrija (Sevilla)

In Seville, Lebrija boasts the only designation of origin of the province. Here, the Palomino grape takes centre stage, known as "the queen of the south".

The Bodegas Halcón, founded in 1711, are an oenological gem where white and generous wines like Fino, Amontillado and Oloroso are produced. To this day, they still use a traditional "criaderas y soleras" system. The guided tour with wine tasting at Bodegas Halcón allows for discovering the essence of the D.O. Lebrija.

Alcalá la Real (Jaén)

Though Jaén is a land of olive oil, Alcalá la Real surprises with a wine corner full of authenticity: the Bodegas Marcelino Serrano, located in the natural site El Cascante.

Founded more than 35 years ago by Marcelino Serrano, today they are run by his daughter, the winemaker Blanca Serrano, heir to the family passion. Here, native varieties like the ancient Torrontés are brought back to produce wines, along with those of other grapes like Syrah, Pinot Noir or Tempranillo.

The most complete experience is the guided visit to the vineyards and Bodega Marcelino Serrano, which includes an introductory wine tasting course featuring three wines and the tasting of local Km 0 products: Extra Virgin Olive Oil, artisanal bread, olives, and charcuterie.

A journey for the senses

We invite you on an unhurried journey, discovering each region through its wines and letting yourself be carried away by the hospitality of its people. Every guided visit to one of these wineries is an open door to new and special sensations you'll want to repeat.

Planning your next getaway? Choose one of these destinations, book your visit and savour the excellence of their wines.
