The historic centre of Jaén has an Andalusian layout and extends at the foot of the Santa Catalina Hill. An Iberian site is known to exist on this hill, but the most significant feature is the Castle of Santa Catalina. This fortification dates back to the 9th century and is of Arab origin. Subsequently, with the Christian conquest, the castle was built as it is known today. The complex is divided into three sections: New Alcazar, the Old, and the Abrehuí.
The Cathedral of Jaén is famous for its beauty. Of Renaissance style, one of the main architects of the temple was Andrés de Vandelvira. The main facade of the Cathedral of the Assumption is Baroque and one of the most notable in this style. Near the temple, declared a World Heritage Site, are the remains of the medieval wall of Jaén.
Another important religious site in Jaén, besides the cathedral, is the church of San Juan, which was built on an old mosque in the 14th century. The Concejo Tower is attached to this church. This building has a bell that was used to call the citizens to attend the council meetings since the building of the primitive town hall was annexed to the church of San Juan. Meanwhile, the church of La Magdalena preserves remains of the old mosque, such as the minaret and the ablutions courtyard. San Ildefonso is a minor basilica and one of the most important and beloved by the people of Jaén. It is erected under Gothic and Renaissance styles and also has Neoclassical touches.
The Palace of the Condestable Iranzo features a hall and a courtyard in Mudejar style, under which the building was erected in the 15th century.
The Arab baths of Jaén have an area of more than 400 m², making them the largest in Spain. They are located in the basement of the Villadompardo Palace, from the 16th century. This building also houses two very interesting museums in the capital: the International Museum of Naïve Art of Jaén, which hosts the work of artist Manuel Mozas, and the Museum of Arts and Popular Customs.
Another place of tourist interest in Jaén is, for example, the air raid shelter of Santiago Square, very well preserved and with documentation related to the Civil War. The Museum of Jaén or the Iberian Museum offer extensive exhibitions of the various archaeological remains found in Jaén.
The gastronomy of Jaén is, of course, based on its wonderful olive oil. With this liquid gold, a multitude of dishes are made such as pipirrana or the ochíos rolls.
