Water Synagogue

The Water Synagogue was found in the Historic Centre of the monumental city of Úbeda. Since 2010, it is open for visits and cultural events.

It was discovered in 2007 by chance by the businessman Fernando Crespo, during building work on what used to be a ladies' hair salon, with the aim of transforming it into tourist apartments.

During the course of this work, archaeological remains of medieval appearance emerged, such as capitals. Over two years, meticulous work was carried out that brought to light several hidden structures at different points of the building.

Its interior is divided into five rooms:

  • Courtyard: a small colonnaded space that provides access to the synagogue. In it, two original columns with palm leaf capitals (Jewish menorah) can be seen.
  • Main hall: it is divided into three aisles, separated by pointed arches on piers. This room is below street level. Its arches were integrated and hidden in the walls of the dwelling that later reused the synagogue's structure.
  • Women's gallery: at a higher level than the main hall. It is believed to have been a space for children and women to attend liturgical ceremonies.
  • Cellar: located under a lowered barrel vault, containing large partially buried jars. They would have stored food such as oil.
  • Mikve: a room intended for ritual purification baths. A space large enough for a person to be fully submerged, with a constant stream of water for renewal, according to Judaism.

This complex opened its doors to visitors in 2010, although it has not been officially confirmed to be an ancient synagogue.

Built: Middle Ages.
