Royal Botanic Garden

Fernando VI ordered the creation of this royal garden. Due to the continuous enlargement of the garden, Carlos II ordered, in 1774, to move it to its current location in the Paseo del Prado in Madrid, inside the program of ordinations of the Salón del Prado and Atocha.

 

It is located over four stepped terraces where plants are exhibited to public; the Terraza de los cuadros (Terrace of the squares), which contains collections of ornamental, medicinal, aromatic and orchard plants; Terraza de las Escuelas Botánicas (Terrace of the Botanic Schools), where a taxonomy plant collection is showed; Terraza del plano en flor (Terrace of the flower-shape floor), in this area there is a wide range of trees and bushes: and finally, the Terraza Alta or de los Laureles (High terrace or Terrace of the laurels), which houses especial collections such as the bonsais´.

 

The herbarium, place where plants are gathered in, dried up and stored, approximately has a million of specimens from all over the world nowadays.
