San Miguel Market is located in the historic centre of Madrid. It dates back to the Middle Ages and is currently considered one of the main gastronomic temples of the city.
The San Miguel Market building was erected at the beginning of the 20th century following the canons of iron and glass architecture on the site that was occupied by the San Miguel de los Octoes church, a temple from which the market takes its name. The entire area surrounding the building was an open-air market in medieval times. Due to the unsanitary conditions generated by the sale of products on the street, the San Miguel Market was inaugurated in 1916. It was later refurbished and acquired by a group of entrepreneurs who turned it into the gastronomic temple it is today.
The building has a rectangular floor plan and has two floors, each with a surface area of almost 2,000 square metres. In its time as a grocery market, the stalls inside were organised along nine streets on the upper floor. Its iron and glass structure allows light to penetrate inside and the lighting is natural.
Currently, the sales stalls have been transformed into bars offering a wide variety of products from all over Spain.
