Museo Sorolla

The museum dedicated to the brilliant painter Joaquín Sorolla is located in what was his residence and also his workshop in Madrid.

The building was constructed in 1911 under the direction of architect Enrique María Repullés. It consists of two floors and an Andalusian-style garden designed by Sorolla himself. On the main floor were, among other rooms, the painter's three studios, illuminated through large windows that fill the rooms with abundant light, just as the Valencian artist required.

Before passing away, his widow made a will to donate her home and her collection of works to the State. Clotilde García del Castillo thereby fulfilled her will to honour her husband's memory. Renovations to adapt the building as a museum began in 1925. Much of its internal structure was refurbished, except for part of the ground floor.

The museum's collections are comprised of works by Sorolla himself, personal belongings, as well as many others that he collected during his lifetime: sculptures, ceramic pieces and even a broad range of family photographs. Most of this comes from the bequests and donations made by the painter's own family. The painting collection is the most representative of the museum: it is possible to admire 1294 pieces by the painter, including Mother or Stroll along the Seashore. The museum also houses a large collection of Sorolla's own drawings.

Likewise, as this institution follows the house-museum typology, it also accommodates the intangible aspects of the space, such as the use of different rooms, the arrangement of furniture or the family's ornamental tastes, among other elements.
