Ourense, capital of the province with the same name in Galicia, is one of the most notable cities in northern Spain. Crossed by the Miño, Barbaña, and Lonia rivers, it is known as the "City of Las Burgas" due to its famous thermal water springs.
Since the Neolithic, the area of Ourense was occupied by nomadic tribes that eventually settled in the Miño valley, forming the well-known pre-Roman "castros". With the arrival of the Roman legions in the 1st century, exploitation of the thermal waters began. At that time, what seemed to be a bridge was built over the Miño river, among other constructions lost to this day. With the arrival of the Suebi in the 5th century, the construction of a cathedral in honour of Saint Martin of Tours began, now vanished. These were turbulent centuries with Norman and Andalusian incursions.
Ourense was one of the first episcopal sees on the peninsula, and in the 12th century, the town council was established to confront episcopal abuses. Earlier, in the 12th century, the construction of the Cathedral of San Martiño began, culminating in the 16th century. From the 19th century onwards, with the arrival of the railway and the construction of the Villacastín-Vigo road, the city experienced significant growth after a period of isolation.
Currently, it stands out for its thermalism. The thermal springs of As Burgas are one of the most emblematic historical places in the city. Furthermore, the Miño Thermal Walk is increasingly attracting more visitors. A walk through nature combining thermalism and unique natural spaces.
Culinary-wise, it is a city where typically Galician dishes stand out. Three important gastronomic events are noteworthy: the Xantar (Galician Salon of Gastronomy and Tourism) and the spring and autumn editions of the already established Tapas Competitions. A series of days to enjoy octopus, wine, and other local foods.
