San Martín's Church and Tower

The original construction dates from 1196, although in the XVII Century it was redesigned.

 

It has three naves, ambulatory, barrel vault with lunettes in the central nave and cross vaults in the side ones. The oldest part of this temple is the Mudéjar tower which consists on two towers, so that one tower wraps the other one, among them there is a staircase that drives to the bell tower. Its construction started in 1315- 1316 and has a square floor.

The interior tower has three superimposed rooms, whereas the exterior one is which supports all the decoration with all the delicacy and details of the Arabic decoration. We should highlight its brick decoration, the bows the form eight points stars, the freize of Mudéjar arches and lobed arches. In the base, there is a pointed barrel vault where there is a passage.

Its wide and levelled Gothic nave with rib vaults and side chapels show us that it is a very old church although it was redesigned with peculiar Churrigueresque motives in 1741.
Although it originally comes from the first Romasnesque Centuries, it was enlarged in the XIII, and three centuries later became Cathedral.
