Bilbao is divided by its river. The city's old town is made up of seven streets: Somera, Artecalle, Tendería, Belosticalle, Carnicería, Barrencalle and Barrencalle Barrena. These streets are the origin of the old town of Bilbao, where you can see the original wall and entrances to the city. The old town is the best place to taste the typical Basque pintxos or txiquito wines.
In this area of the city is the Arriaga Theatre. This building is neo-Baroque in style and was built in the 19th century. Over time, it has undergone various refurbishments, as it was affected, for example, by the 1983 floods. Many plays and operas are performed in this theatre, and important actors and artists from the international scene attend.
The Cathedral of Bilbao, Gothic in style, is under the patronage of the apostle Santiago the Greater and is the oldest church in the Basque city. The New and Miguel de Unamuno Squares are also part of Bilbao's old town. In the square dedicated to the famous Basque philosopher are the Museo Arqueológico de Bizkaia and the Museo Vasco de Bilbao.
Next to the river is located the Bilbao City Hall, an eclectic style building whose most outstanding room is the Arab Hall.
The Ensanche of Bilbao was projected in the 19th century on the other side of the river. The Gran Vía runs through this new area of glass-fronted buildings. Very close to the main artery of Bilbao is the Guggenheim Museum, designed by Frank O. Gehry. The building, with its curvilinear and twisted shapes and clad in titanium, is a work of art in itself. In the Ensanche, you can also visit places such as the Euskalduna Conference and Music Hall, the Provincial Government Palace or the University of Deusto.
Other places of interest in Bilbao include the Basilica of Begoña, built in the 16th century but with various later restorations, and the San Vicente Mártir de Abando Church. The Virgin, "Amatxo", of the Basilica of Begoña is much revered by the people of Bilbao.
In addition to the aforementioned Guggenheim Museum and the two located in the Miguel de Unamuno Square, Bilbao has other cultural centres such as Azkuna Zentroa, Itsasmuseum or the Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao.
The Basque gastronomy is one of the best in Spain. Among its dishes, the marmitako stew, the Basque-style hake or desserts like goxua, made of sponge cake and cream, stand out.
